Basepoint Engineering believes in a slightly different model of company. Traditionally, hiring third party engineering is an expensive custom solution involving a lot of back and forth between customer and engineering and each solution is custom made. Here at Basepoint, we hope to leverage the internet to distribute high quality engineering to a broader market thus reducing the cost per transaction for the service to a more affordable rate.
We value on-demand service, nimbleness and location flexibility. We are committed to not having a headquarters and opting to be everywhere instead of somewhere specific. We will always come to you for face-to-face meetings and are available for communication any time. We will always be here to offer custom solutions to unique problems because we have way too much experience doing that to walk away from it.

Meet the team members of Basepoint Engineering
Jason Thompson P.Eng.
My name is Jason Thompson and I am a professional engineer practicing in Alberta Canada. I went to school at the University of Calgary and took the manufacturing engineering program. Through the co-op program I took my first engineering job with a local manufacturing company where I worked for a couple year learning valuable manufacturing skills. After finishing my degree myself and a few partners started an engineering firm that specializes in designing and building mobile oilfield equipment. Being a part of the Alberta oilfield has afforded me the opportunity to be exposed to a lot of different equipment in a lot of different industries. I also had the opportunity to be involved in many prototype designs that originated on napkin sketches and ended with finished products going to work in the field.
Over the course of my engineering career I grew particularly fond of cranes and lifting equipment. Following this interest I expanded our business into developing below the hook lifting devices, equipment certification and weld inspection as well as various engineering services related to cranes such as sub frame design. I can’t put my finger on why I like this industry so much, but I think it’s because the engineering behind a spreader bar is such an elegant solution to the problem yet the depth to them makes it complex to build a business around.
Basepoint engineering is a new venture for me. It comes after years of studying what I believe is an ideal business model for engineering. It is a new approach and I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Shawn Hansen P.Eng.
Hi my name is Shawn Hansen and I am Basepoint Engineering’s technical lead. My educational background is in mechanical engineering and my experience has been designing and producing mobile equipment. I went to school at the University of Calgary and took my first engineering job at a manufacturing shop in Linden Alberta. After getting a year or two of experience I helped run and build a successful engineering firm for the better part of ten years.
I specialize in performing high end structural analysis to support design decisions aided by modern finite element analysis. I enjoy using new technology to challenge classical engineering thinking and using that to push the envelope of design. This allows me to produce stronger and lighter equipment and to approach old problems in a fresh way. Much of my career has been spent designing different oilfield equipment for the Alberta oil industry. This includes scratch designing and building new designs for service rig derricks, trailers, catwalks and even a bit of cryogenic equipment. I also am one of the few engineers in the world comfortable working inside the API (American Petroleum Institute) code specifically API 4f for designing derricks and have used these skills for services ranging from helping customers obtain API certification all the way to reviewing existing designs for API suitability.
Through out my career I have focused on building systems for processes that I develop. Whether it be training and mentoring young engineers or standardizing an approach for analysis I build systems around tasks that I perform. This has allowed me to offer customers more value because of the efficiency that can be optained by an optimized process.
Basepoint Engineering is a new challenge for me and I am looking forward to servicing customers for their design needs. I am planning to continue to push the design boundaries and continue to offer efficient high end analysis services.
